Available Courses

All band courses qualify for Core 40 and Academic Honors diploma. Attendance at concert performances is required by all courses.

 

Class Description Instructor

Intermediate Band
(Freshmen Band)

Prerequisite: Currently enrolled in a band class with grades of "C" or higher or by permission of the instructor.

This developmental concert band class is open to all freshmen students who play a band instrument at an intermediate level. Emphasis is placed on tone, technique development and sightreading. Participation in the ISSMA Solo/Ensemble contest is encouraged. Interested students may audition (in January) for the marching band. The band performs several times during the year. Based on enrollment and instrumentation this band is frequently split into two separate ensembles. Keith Rudolph

Intermediate Band
(Concert Band)

Prerequisite: Currently enrolled in a band class with grades of "C" or higher or by permission of the instructor.

This concert band class is open to all Penn students who play a band instrument at an intermediate or better level. Emphasis is placed on tone, technique development and sightreading. Jazz theory and improvisation are included in the course of study. The group performs several times each year. Bill Leather

(Symphonic Band)

Prerequisite: Audition or permission of the instructor

This course represents Penn High School in public performances and competitions. Advanced performance techniques are emphasized. Serious band literature is selected from a variety of periods in music history. Glenn Northern

Advanced Band
(Symphonic Winds)

Prerequisite: Audition or permission of the instructor

 

This advanced instrumental represents Penn High School in public performances and competitions. Advanced performance techniques are emphasized. Serious band literature is selected from a variety of periods in music history. Private lessons are highly encouraged. Keith Rudolph
