Concert Band Rules

Tardy Rules -- All students must be in their assigned seats with instrument, music, pencil, and planner when the tardy bell rings. Individual warm-up will begin immediately. A third tardy will result in detention (PHS policy).

Classroom Attendance Rule -- Students are responsible for attending all scheduled rehearsals and performances unless excused in advance by the instructor. Emergency situations are the lone exception. Students missing a class period rehearsal are expected to make up the absence within five school days of the absence. There will be a 3% deduction from the nine weeks grade for each absence that is not made up.

Snack Rules -- Gum, candy, food, and beverages are not permitted in the music area.

Classroom Discipline -- Appropriate classroom behavior AND appropriate use of class time is expected at all times in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Penn High Student Handbook.

Inappropriate behavior will result in:
1st time: a verbal reprimand and documentation.
2nd time: a verbal reprimand, documentation, and parent call.
3rd time: a verbal reprimand, documentation, meeting with parents; possible exclusion from band.

Rehearsal Discipline -- Proper rehearsal techniques are expected at all times.

a. Listen carefully and follow directions.
b. Sit with proper posture (attitude vs. ability).
c. Have your music organized (check the board).
d. Have a pencil, music, instruments, and needed accessories at all rehearsals.
e. Be courteous of others.

Instrument/Music Storage -- All music equipment and property is to be well maintained, respected, and kept in its proper storage area. Lockers must be locked at all times.

School Instruments/Lockers -- To insure the proper maintenance and care of school instruments, student who rent/use school equipment are not to loan that equipment to other students. If a school instrument is damaged due to neglect, the student's responsible for all damages. Students will be issued a school locker and padlock. A use fee of $1.00 is charged for the lock. Lost locks are $8.50. Students misusing their locker will lose their locker!

Concert Attire -- Jewelry is not permitted if it can be seen. Further instructions are provided for concert attire:

  • Concert band fitting for tuxes and dresses will take place after the competition marching season has come to an end. Concert Band shoes are provided. Most of the male students will wear their marching shoes with their tuxes.

  • Males will provide their own white button down shirt and dress black socks. Women will provide black hose.
  • All tuxes and dresses are property of the school. Students are responsible for any lost items.

  • No part of that attire is to be taken home at any time, for any reason, by any student. The outfits are repaired by our volunteer parents and professionally cleaned.
